“IF YOU COULD ONLY CHOOSE ONE MORE PROJECT TO WORK ON, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?”

THIS IS ULTIMATE ACTING QUESTION. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON IN YOUR SPARE TIME, AND WHAT YOU COULD BE DOING? ACTORS OFTEN SPEND SO MUCH TIME FUMBLING AROUND TRYING TO WORK ON SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS, THAT THEY END UP NOT FOCUSING ON ONE PROJECT WITH THE STEELY FOCUS IT DESERVES. THIS CHEATSHEET IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU GET ALIGNED WITH EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT THE MOST.

“If you could only choose one more project to work on, which one would you do?”

This question was actually thrust upon me once in my writing group. And it’s such a great question. And I now want you to consider it.

We know a few things have to happen each day. You have to eat (1 hour), you have to sleep (7-8 hours), you need time for dating, drinking, exercise (30mins-1 hour), travel, auditions, learning lines, admin, tax, showers (if you’re so inclined). You get the idea. You’ve got a lot on. If you’re doing all those things, and then all those extra things you WANT to do as an actor on top of that, how do you manage not to stretch yourself in a million different directions?

You simply don’t. You get pushed and pulled and are constantly in a state of sweaty confusion over ‘what do I do next’. Right? Right!

SO WHAT WOULD YOU DO AS AN ACTOR IF YOU COULD ONLY ACT IN ONE MORE THING?

A Hollywood blockbuster?

A theatre show?

An improvisation or self devised pop-up piece?

A student short done by a mediocre school who won’t ever give you a copy (probably not hey).

It’s really worth thinking about. I’m constantly baffled when an actor comes to me to chat about their grand plans and tell me about all the different stuff they are working on at the moment. They’re writing, they’re performing in a student film, working on a feature film idea with a mate, auditioning for some fringe theatre, thinking about joining an improv group, going up for commercials via their agent, and learning how to ride a horse, do stage combat, three types of languages and Tango lessons. It is simply too much! You have to get crystal clear on what you want to do, and slow down.

You need to get clear on that one thing, and reset your acting drivers so you start to really direct your efforts to that one thing you really want. Even if it’s just for this month. So you can refocus and regroup.
